As part of my Onewheel Plus Makeover, we will be skinning the Onewheel Rails with a Vinyl Wrap. There are Pre-Cut Onewheel wraps available to make this process extremely easy, but if you are like me and really enjoy a project you can DIY a Vinyl Wrap on your Onewheel.
Keep reading for a closer look at how I did my DIY Onewheel Vinyl Wrap
DIY Onewheel Vinyl Wrap
Now for the fun part.
While using vinyl wrap for the first time can be a little daunting it is actually very easy. The hardest part is the preparation.
Tools And Materials
- Vivid Carbon Fibre Vinyl Wrap
- Vinyl Wrap Tool Kit
- Goo Gone Adhesive Remover
- Shop Rags
- Basic Hand Tools
Cleaning My Onewheel Rails
Whether you have old sidekicks, stickers or your Onewheel is just a little dirty. The first thing you need to do is clean the rails. The Vinyl Wrap is not going to stick if your rails are dirty.
I had plastered my rails with reflective tape and unfortunately, this stuff was incredibly difficult to remove. I needed to use a heavy duty solvent. So to prevent the solvent from getting into the footpads or electrical systems I completely tore down my Onewheel.
The great thing about Float Sidekicks is when you are ready to take them off. With the right technique, they come off clean, leaving little or no residue behind. The same can’t be said for most sticker and decals, they will take some elbow grease. Once your rails are clean, wipe them down with a light solvent to clean off any remaining oil or adhesive residue.
Rough Cut Of The Vinyl Wrap
Now the Onewheel Rails are nice and clean, we are ready to install the wrap. Some vinyl has cut lines to make cutting your pieces easier, the product I have does not, too bad. I cut two pieces of vinyl, at 4 x 28 inches. This allows for enough vinyl to wrap the top, side, and bottom of each Onewheel Rail.
Installing The DIY Onewheel Vinyl Wrap
To make the install easier, I left the footpads off. This is optional as you can wrap your rails without removing the footpads. There is a little extra work trimming out all the screw holes. This Vinyl Application Tool Kit makes the whole job so much easier.
The Finished DIY Onewheel Vinyl Wrap
All in all, I am very happy with the finished look. Check back in the very near future for a complete look at my Onewheel Plus Makeover that features a Spectrum Magnetic Fender from Craft&Ride, some Custom Decals from Float365, Crystal Clear Float Sidekicks to protect my new Vinyl Wrap and new ProRide Traction Pads.
As always, take the road less traveled.
Now go out and ride!

Didn’t even know this was a customization technique! I was effin around with the idea (some not too bad attempts) of using removable vinyl to cover my rails temporarily (and get an idea of how certain rails would look).
Good post!

You get some nice lines with the vinyl. Thanks for the comment.
