Building A Custom Wood DIY DJ Booth
After collecting bargain DJ equipment on used websites, it’s time to put it all together in a compact and portable DJ Booth-style Table Stand.
As technology progresses and DJ products get better and better, what happens to all that old DJ equipment? It sells cheaply on used websites. This cheap second-hand equipment is still extremely fun to play with, and the perfect way to build your DJ skills and dabble without spending a fortune on the latest products from the big brands in DJ.
DIY DJ Booth Ideas – The Design Inspiration – DJ Hero
I always loved the look of flush-mounted, built-in turntables on high-end custom DJ Tables. My initial idea and design inspiration came from a DJ Hero Game Case. What if I could use the case from a DJ Hero controller set and turn it into a miniature working DJ Booth.
It wasn’t quite that simple, but keep reading to see how I used some DJ Hero Parts as I played with different ideas.
Portable Scratch Craze
The Idea to use DJ Hero parts first struck me a few years ago when the portable scratch scene and 7” scratch records started to become more popular. I wanted to mount a Numark PT and a small mixer inside.
Raiden Fader in a DJ Hero Controller
While the PT was too big to fit inside the unmodified DJ Hero case, I did successfully modify the controller to house a Raiden Fader for a unique and possibly one-of-a-kind portable scratch mixer.🤙 Beep, Ahh Fresh!
DJ Hero Case Legs
After some planning, we salvaged the legs from an old DJ Hero Case. These will give our Simple DIY DJ Booth a super clean look.
The Components
After searching used websites and our local classifieds. Over the course of about two years, I collected the following equipment at a ridiculously low cost.
- Denon DN-S1000
These little CDJ style CD players are somewhat limited but with digital scratch, massive pitch adjustments, and two easily programmable cue points. They are fun to use.
- DJ-Tech DIF 1S
The DIF 1S is a tough little basic DJ Scratch Mixer equipped with an InnoFADER Mini making it a perfect option for this use.
- Bose SoundDock OG
I have owned this portable speaker since 2009. It has amazing sound quality and is very loud for its size.
- Korg mini-KP Kaoss Pad
The Korg mini-KP Kaoss Pad is a compact DynamicEffect Processor. A touch-sensitive pad makes it fun to control the inbuilt synthesizer and other effects.
DIY Compact Wood DJ Booth -The Steps
This idea has been stewing in my mind for so long. I am excited to finally bring it to life.
Tools and Materials
- Drill Driver
- Drill Bits
- Mitre Saw
- Holesaw Bits
- Jigsaw
- Wood Glue
- Wood Stain
- ¼” Threaded Inserts
- ¼” Pan Head Screws
- Irwin Quick Clamps
Step-1 Build The Case
Collect Materials
To keep costs low, I opted to use cheaper SPF Lumber and a sheet of plywood underlay. I had the bottom and top plate cut to size by the panel saw at Home Depot.
Box Frame
After cutting the side pieces to length, the Box Frame is glued together with extra strength wood glue. The frame is held together with quick clamps until the glue sets.
Access Port
Next, we cut out holes to access the CD slots and headphone and microphone jack.
Leg Brackets
We use a hole saw to cut out holes for the leg brackets.
Top Plate Screw Inserts
The top plate will be held in place by ¼” machine screws.
#ProTip Use a little glue on the wood inserts.
Step-2 Cut Out The Top Plate
We used the jigsaw to cut out holes for decks and the mixer.
Step-3 Stain, Walnut, and Black Color Combo
Conveniently I had Varathane one-step stain and polyurethane leftover from one of my previous projects. I love the modern two-tone look
Step-4 Power Switch
The on switches will not be accessible, so I added a simple line switch to cut power to all the pieces of equipment at one time.
Step-5 The Hookup
The setup is the standard two TT and Mixer connection. Although the DJ Tech DIF 1S does have a Send option for a Serato box which I plan on running through a Kaoss Pad in the future.
Let’s Get This Party Started!
We filled CDs with some classic scratch sounds and DJ Tools for a taste of turntablism without the vinyl.
Will It Float
Yes, this setup rocks the party. So fun and especially rewarding to see both my sons interested and excited about it. While this is not a “high-end” setup, it is perfect for kids to pound on and learn without worry.
