Kyle Doerkson, CEO and founder of Californian company Future Motion, conceptualized and developed a working prototype. The Onewheel V1 was released to the public in 2014 via a Kickstarter campaign.
Since the release of the original Onewheel V1 in 2014, The Onewheel has developed quite a cult following, with communities of riders all over the world.

A One Wheel Skateboard? Not Quite!
Onewheel Hypercore Brushless Hub Motor
What is a Onewheel Hypercore Brushless Hub Motor? The Onewheel centers itself around the Hypercore brushless hub motor. The patented Hypercore motor allows for the smoothest possible power output. It has increased the available power for easy hill climbing with a whisper quiet ride.
Onewheel Tire
Uniquely, the Onewheel is renowned for its smooth and buttery ride. This is achieved with the use of an 11-inch air-filled go-kart tire. Your dream of endless pillowy lines has come true!
The Board
Held together with a CNC machined 6061 billet aluminum frame helps to keep the onewheel weight relatively low (25 Lbs) and the hardwood tip and tail footpads will keep you locked in for those tight surf style carves.
Onewheel Battery and Control
Powered by a 48V Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. Coupled with the Solid State MEMS 6-DOF sensors and Future Motions core Onewheel technologies allow for the board to be ridden without any type of handheld controller. You just “lean and go”. The board becomes a true extension of yourself.
Onewheel Models
Onewheel Original
Three Onewheel models have been released since 2014. First, the Onewheel Original launched via a Kickstarter campaign in January 2014. This model features the 500W transverse flux hub motor. Powered by a 48V Lithium Iron Phosphate battery.
Onewheel+
Second, the Onewheel Plus, released in January of 2017 comes upgrades with the new 750W Hypercore hub motor. Coupled with the new Surestance Footpad for better control with a canted pad and larger foot sensor.
Onewheel+ XR
Third, the newest Onewheel model and what should be considered the flagship of the future Motion family is the Onewheel Plus XR. Similarly, the Onewheel+ XR features the same Hypercore motor as the plus but with the newly expanded battery capacity and game-changing “Extended Range”.
Onewheel Price
The Onewheel is a little on the pricey side, with the Onewheel+ coming in at $1,499.00 USD and the Onewheel+ XR $1,799.00. Although this is more than other electric skateboards in the market, none of the competition offers a board quite as unique as the Onewheel.
Above all, the decision to buy will be difficult. If you are undecided as to whether you should buy a Onewheel or not, don’t be.
Ultimately, it is not if but when. Therefore, you need this one wheel skateboard!
