Future motion has just released the new Onewheel GT to replace the previous top-tier Onewheel XR. This new Onewheel model has all the things the Onewheel community has been asking for. More power, more range, more of everything you might want from a flagship Onewheel.
Que cinematic sequence and suspenseful music.
Onewheel GT – The New More Powerful Onewheel
And if you didn’t know…
What is a Onewheel
The Onewheel™ is a one-wheeled self-balancing electric skateboard with top speeds upwards of 19mph and the ability to ride on and off the road.
The original Onewheel V1 was launched in 2014 as a Kickstarter campaign and released to the public in 2015
The Onewheel offers remote free operation that is intuitive and easy to control. Once mastered, the Onewheel truly becomes an extension of one’s body.
Previous Onewheel Models
Before the Onewheel GT and Onewheel Pint X release. Each incarnation of Onewheel came with improvements and design upgrades to better the previous models.
Onewheel Plus
The Onewheel Plus + improvements included the Hypercore motor and larger Foot Pad sensors.
Onewheel XR
Onewheel XR improved more to the massive upgrades of the Onewheel Plus with the addition of Xtra Range. Hence why it is called the XR
Onewheel Pint
Future Motion aimed their sights at a new audience with the Onewheel Pint. This fun and nimble, Pint size model evolved the Onewheel into a more sleek-looking product.
Now for the main event…
Onewheel GT is the Onewheel you have been waiting for!
Increased speed, more power, and added control via front and back concave Footpads make the new Onewheel GT the Onewheel riders have been waiting for.
Onewheel GT Specs
- 20-32 mile range (32-51 kilometers)
- 20 mph Top speed (32kph)
- Motor: 750W Hypercore® hub motor
- Battery: NMC Weight: 27lbs
- Sensors: Solid state MEMS 6-DOF
- Tire: 10.5in x 4.5-6in Onewheel
- Max lean angle: >30 degrees
Max Speed
How fast is the Onewheel GT?
While most Onewheel riders will say it’s about the journey and that the Onewheel’s attraction is not about speed. The new Onewheel GT takes its max speed to the maximum level allowable by law. The Onewheel GT is listed as having a Max Speed that tops out at 20 MPH, or 32 KM. While Onewheel GT top speed is only slightly better than the XR, this is not where the GT will stand apart.
More Power
The real thing that makes the GT stand apart from other Onewheel models is the increased power. Future Motion has tuned 3hp out of their 750 Watt Hypercore® hub motor to make the Onewheel GT the fastest and most powerful Onewheel ever.
Onewheel GT Charge Time
How long does it take to charge a Onewheel GT
By using new high capacity 21700 batteries, the Onewheel GT gets more range, more speed, and more power, but this also means more charging. But not too much more. Charge time for the Onewheel GT is listed at 200 minutes when using the stock charger or 90 minutes when using the optional Hypercharger. Compare that with the XR’s 1charge time of 120 minutes with the standard charger and 60 with the Hypercharger and you can see that the charge time is relative. But let’s be real, with a battery capacity this large, you won’t need to charge mid adventure.
Onewheel GT Tire Size
One of the stand out changes for the new Onewheel GT is the tire size and the Hub size. Future Motion has changed the hub size to 6.5” shipping new Onewheel GT’s with an 11.5 x 6.5-6” tire. Being that this is a nonstandard size, it effectively removes any option for aftermarket or 3rd party Onewheel tire upgrades. Big sad face!
Negative aspects to changing the Onewheel GT Hub Size
Jake Leary comments on the change in hub/rim size pointing out… Two Glaring Design Flaws on the Onewheel GT. As Jake says, try not to speculate, and give FM the benefit of the doubt. Watch the video…
Onewheel GT Treaded Tire
The new Onewheel GT is the first Onewheel to be sold from the factory with the option of a treaded tire. Trail riders are going to love it. This new treaded tire option will truly make the GT a Onewheel for all terrains.
Onewheel GT vs XR
The Onewheel GT has some seriously impressive specs, and even without real-world reviews, you can be certain that it will dominate the Onewheel racing scene. The added speed and torque will reign supreme on trails and technical terrain. With that being said, if you are looking for 3rd party accessories for customization and tire options then the XR is still the best option.
Onewheel GT Waterproof
Is the Onewheel GT waterproof?
Just like the previous Onewheel models, the Onewheel GT is not waterproof. If water was to cause your board to malfunction, it would not be covered by warranty. Furthermore, water introduces more possibilities for short circuits and battery fire.
There are measures like the Badger Wheel Onewheel Waterproof Kit you can use to improve the waterproofing of a Onewheel GT. But even so, riding a Onewheel in water is always rider beware.
Weight Limit
Onewheel GT has a new increased recommended weight limit of 275 lbs. Exceeding the recommended weight limit will cause decreased range as well as premature wear on components.
Onewheel GT Ship Date
When is the Onewheel GT expected to ship?
Currently (at the time of writing) the Onewheel GT is expected to start shipping on January 17. Head over to the GT Tracker at 88ghz to see a tabled list of estimated ship dates as listed by the Onewheel Community. Onewheel GT’s are shipping in order of purchase so if you jumped in on the release day, then you could possibly see your GT before February.
Onewheel GT Review
It’s very early days on the review stage for the Onewheel GT but there is (as of writing) one legitimate review from a prominent member of the Onewheel community, reigning Onewheel Race For The Tail champion. Tyler James tylertheexplorer_
In this first review of a hands-on Onewheel GT experience, Tyler touches on his background, his appreciation for Onewheel and the Onewheel community before moving on to his thoughts and experience testing the Onewheel GT.
