One of the easiest and best upgrades for a Onewheel is the addition of a Concave Footpad. And, great news, as the Onewheel Concave Footpad selection has expanded recently! There are so many new Onewheel Footpads with Concave levels ranging from mellow through to Deep. There is also a different build material and install methods.
Deep Concave Onewheel Footpads
This post will focus on one of the two main categories (Mellow, and Deep Concave Onewheel Footpads) as well as taking a quick look into stick on and Overlay Footpad Systems.
What Is Concave
regularly used on skateboard decks, Concave refers to the side to side curvature shaping, on the top side of your Onewheel Footpad.
Different Levels Of Concave
Onewheel Footpads can be broken down into three different levels of Concave.
Flat / No Concave
This is a one model category for the Onewheel Surestance Footpad that comes standard on the Onewheel Plus and Onewheel XR. The standard No Concave Footpad is fine for beginners and learning to ride. But, a Mellow or Deep Concave Footpad is what you want once you are ready to push your skills to the next level.
Mellow Concave
Mellow Concave is a low to medium level of Concave to give you a locked-in feel as well as help minimize foot fatigue.
Popular Onewheel Footpads in the Mellow Concave category include……
- OG Kush Concave – CarvePower x Float Life Collab
- OneTail Classic Concave Foot Pad for Onewheel (Craft&Ride)
- OneTail+ Extended Concave Foot Pad for Onewheel (Craft&Ride)
- M-Tech Flex Pad
- Surestance Pro (Onewheel)
- Surestance Pro Fusion (Onewheel)
- Hover Pad (Electric Bigfoot)
- Dual Density Hover Pad (Electric Bigfoot)
Deep Concave
Deep Concave Onewheel Footpads have aggressive side to side Concave with the additional heel kick shaping. This extra concave allows for the deepest carves and freedom to crush the most technical terrain.
Popular Onewheel Footpads in the Deep Concave category include……
- Cobra Grip Pad (OWARMOR)
- Viper Grip Pad (OWARMOR)
- Kush Hi – CarvePower x Float Life Collab
- OneTail Extreme Concave Foot Pad for Onewheel (Craft&Ride)
- Surestance Pro Max (Onewheel)
How Does A Concave Footpad Improve The Way Your Onewheel Rides?
The standard Onewheel Footpads are completely flat. Because of this, it is common for riders to get cramps and numbness in their feet after an extended ride time. One of the major benefits of using a Concave Footpad is the mitigation of this ride killing foot fatigue. The banked sides of a Concave Footpad give more leverage to help maintain maximum control on both heel and toe side maneuvers.
Additionally, Concave creates a sweet spot or pocket for your foot to lock into, giving you unparalleled control over your Onewheel. Once you ride a Concave Footpad you will wonder how you ever rode without one!
Mellow Concave VS Deep Concave
Your riding style, as well as shoe size, will play a large part in the depth of concave you prefer. Riders with a larger shoe size (Men’s 11+) often find they prefer a mellow Concave as the sharper ridges of the Deep Concave Footpads can cause discomfort. Whereas, skilled technical riders often prefer a Deep Concave Footpad to give them the best rider to board connection.
Concave Footpad Overlays
A Footpad Overlay is a new method for adding Concave to your existing standard Onewheel Footpad. To install a Concave Footpad Overlay, you simply remove your existing Onewheel grip tape, then stick the Overlay right on to the Footpad. There are currently three different third party Onewheel Accessory providers offering Concave Footpad Overlay options for your Onewheel. They are….
Fishbones – Onewheel Front Concave System
Another great way to add Concave to your Onewheel Footpads is to use Fishbones. FISHBONES are an impressive and effective solution to the design challenges faced by concave Onewheel front footpads.
