Removing Onewheel Grip Tape

March 14, 2020 by Ben Domaschenz

What to know how to Remove your Onewheel Grip Tape? It won’t take too long before your stock Onewheel Grip Tape will need removing. Have upgraded your rear Footpad and want to get back that symmetrical look? Maybe you have a set of traction pads you need to install?Removing Onewheel Grip Tape

With use, the Grip Tape on your Onewheel will wear out. So, whether it’s for form or function, at some point you will have to remove and change your Onewheel Grip Tape.

Removing Onewheel Grip Tape

Removing my Onewheel Pint Grip Tape is part of our Onewheel Pint Makeover Series which also includes the following.

  • DIY Onewheel Pint Vinyl Wrap.
  • 3Dway Concave Bumper Install
  • DIY Onewheel Pint Traction Pad (coming soon)

Check these out for the complete project.

Now, let’s get into it!

How To Remove Your Onewheel Grip Tape

#Disclaimer: As with any modification to your Onewheel, this is done at your own risk! There is a possibility your FootPad sensor can be damaged and malfunction. Removing your Onewheel grip tape will void your warranty. Do your research and make your own decisions accordingly.

Tools and Materials

  • Heat Gun or Hair Dryer or Space Heater
  • Adhesive Remover
Heat Source

To soften up the adhesive holding the Grip Tape in place you will need to apply heat. Now, you don’t need an industrial-style heat gun as you can get away with using a hairdryer. Personally, I like to use a small Space Heater. (more even heat, means less chance I will melt🔥something)

Adhesive Remover

Isopropyl Alcohol(or Goo Gone), will easily remove any remaining onewheel grip tape adhesive and clean your footpad ready to install your new grip tape or traction pad.

Step-1 Heat

Using a heat gun will help soften the adhesive. I start by sitting the board in front of a small space heater. (My garage is F-ing cold in the winter!) Be careful not to overheat the board.Step-1 Heating The Onewheel Grip Tape Adhesive

Step-2 Peel

With the right amount of heat, the grip tape should come off with ease. Just be sure to peel back and not up. Peeling up increases the chance you will lift and damage your sensor. #ProTip Start from the wheel side and work your way out.Step-2 Peeling Back The Onewheel Pint Grip Tape

Step-3 Clean

Wipe away any remaining adhesive with a rag soaked with Isopropyl Alcohol. Stubborn adhesive can be removed with Goo Gone. I only have Goof Off right now, so I am being careful not to use too much as it can degrade plastic. Step-3 Clean away any remaining adhesive with a rag soaked with Isopropyl Alcohol

Step-4 Test

Before you go ahead and install your new footpad topper. You should test to make sure your Onewheel footpad sensor is functioning correctly. The Onewheel Pint’s integrated lightbar makes testing your footpad sensor quick and easy.Step-4 Test your Onewheel footpad sensor is functioning correctly

What Now?

Now that you have successfully removed your Onewheel’s grip tape you can install your preference of Grip Tape or Traction Pad.

    Very informative and detailed instructions.
Would love to try this since my stock grip tape is almost in its last few kilometers

    Thank you for this
And more power to this website

      Thanks Frederick,
The space heater trick makes it so easy. Next, I will be showing you guys how easy it is to DIY a set of traction pads. Keep an eye out for that one.

Hi, I did this last week and used some regular skateboard grip tape, which seems slightly thicker (and better) than the stock Onewheel grip tape..anyway, now when I am getting on it it wants to nosedive and the motor won’t engage when I bring it to level while standing on it…after a few times, it will..but it makes me nervous like it might do this when I am moving. Anyone else have this happening?

Hi Christopher, it is important to make sure your pad has cooled before installing your fresh grip. Not doing this can sometimes cause the sensor interference.
I hope you can figure it out.
